  • New Superintendent Candidate Profile

Dr. Elizabeth Osga, a consultant from New England School Development Council (NESDEC) facilitated focus group meetings representing parents, community members, administrators, faculty and staff and conducted multiple individual interviews of key stakeholders.  In addition, an online survey containing the same questions was made available.  The information gathered was used to detail the qualities, characteristics, skills, knowledge and experience desired in a new Superintendent of Schools and to identify the pressing challenges ahead of him or her.  Working closely with Dr. Osga, the Board of Education search committee reviewed and analyzed the information which was used to develop the Successful Candidate Profile which is attached.  This profile will be used to guide the interview and selection process for the search of our new Superintendent.

  • Superintendent Search Begins

The Preston Board of Education has launched the search for its next superintendent of schools. A schedule of search activities has been developed, with action beginning immediately and an appointment expected to occur in early May.

Although the Board of Education has appointed a subcommittee for the search process, the full Board will be involved in the final appointment.  Focus groups and an on-line survey will provide stakeholders with opportunities to provide input into the search process.  A candidate profile will be developed based on the input.

The New England School Development Council (NESDEC) is facilitating the search. Advertising and recruitment will focus on Connecticut and the balance of the New England states, but applications from qualified candidates beyond will be considered.

Mark your calendars to participate in the February focus group - details will follow in January.

  • Pay for school lunch online

Did you know you could pay for your student's lunch online? You may use your MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit or debit card to make electronic payments onto your student's account. The first step is to set up your user account with PowerSchool (use the link in quick links or one posted below), our student database system. Required access information was provided to you over the summer.

Once you have established a PowerSchool account that is linked to your student's information, you will be able to access RevTrak, our merchant banking provider. This is our "banking" page. You may, of course, still pay by check or with cash but we hope this saves you valuable time.

Should you have any additional questions, please call our schools' offices.

Welcome to Preston Public Schools!

Enrolling over 400 students, Preston Public Schools comprises Preston Veterans’ Memorial School (PK-5) and Preston Plains Middle School (6-8). Upon completion of the eighth grade program, Preston students have the option of attending Norwich Free Academy (Designated High School), Ledyard High School, Ledyard Agri-Science High School, Grasso Vocational Technical High School, Norwich Vocational-Technical School, New London Science and Technology High School, or Marine Science High School.

As a school district, we are committed throughout our organization to ensuring that children receive an excellent education and enjoy their experience in Preston. Ideal teacher-student ratios in conjunction with a focused academic program accompanied by appropriate support services are designed to guarantee that every child has a successful experience.

We also place a great deal of emphasis on developing a strong school-home partnership. Parents are welcome in our schools and play an active role as evidenced by the presence of parent volunteers and two active parent-teacher organizations. Our efforts always pay dividends and complement our personal commitment to the 4 C’s – communication, coordination, cooperation, and collaboration.

As the district’s superintendent, I am also conscious of the importance of creating goals that guide our efforts. Toward that end, the following goals for the 2016-2017 school year provide a perspective on what we expect to accomplish this year. You may also find the accompanying recapitulation of previous year's goals of interest as well.

In conclusion, I am delighted that you chose to visit our webpage and take a tour. Upon completion of the tour, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like further information about Preston Public Schools.

John J. Welch, Superintendent
